The workshop on Service-Oriented Mapping 2016 took place on June 13th 2016 ath the Hasso Plattner Institute at the University of Potsdam (http://www.hpi.de). It was a preconference and cooperating workshop of the German Cartographers Day 2016 (geoinfo 2016) in Potsdam (http://geoinfo.dgfk.net/workshops.xhtml).
The workshop introduced to the operation of a spatial data infrastructure, including the preparation of metadata and combined datasets. It covered the creation of spatial data services as well as publishing thematic maps on the basis of serive-oriented technologies.
The main use cases in the given examples of the workshop covered topics of environment, statistics and geoinformatics. Standardized interfaces, legal frameworks like INSPIRE and Open Source components (GeoServer, GeoNetwork, QGIS, ...) were considered and embedded.
The workshop was lead by the ICA Commission on Map Production and Geoinformation Management (http://mapproduction.icaci.org) in cooperation with the ICA Commission on GI for Sustainability (http://www.susgis.net/susgis_members.shtml) and the DGfK Section Berlin-Brandenburg (http://berlin-brandenburg.dgfk.net/).
16 german speaking participants from regional agencies were interested in the topic of service-oriented mapping. Even if not all planned exercises could be finished, the participants felt great success and established substantial understanding for this new cartographic working area and its problems.
Workshop on Service-Oriented Mapping: from SDI to thematic webmaps (in German language) takes place as preconference hands-on workshop during the 64th German day of cartography (http://geoinfo.dgfk.net/workshops.xhtml) on June 13th 2016 in Potsdam.
